Micromax recently launched its new Evok series in India, stating that it was targeted towards young professionals. The first smartphone launched in the series, Micromax Evok, is a budget device.
While all the flagship phones incorporate the best technologies possible to maximize user experience, the fact remains that not all of us require a top-of-the-line phone beefed up with the latest and greatest specifications.
This is where budget smartphone play a vital role, as they are packed with all the basic features required on a daily basis and don't cost a fortune. And with the Evok, it seems that Micromax has tried to provide users just that.

Design and display
Micromax Evok comes with a 5.5 inch HD IPS display of 720x1280 pixels resolution and protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3. Running Android 5.1 Lollipop, the phone is powered by a 1.4GHz octa-core processor paired with 3GB of RAM. While the screen resolution and basic hardware are adequate considering the price tag, gaming experience wasn't that impressive during our testing. Micromax Evok, such as WWE Immortals and Injustice: Gods Among Us.
For almost all the games, the device started heating up after just 10-15 minutes of gameplay. As for the build quality, the device feels lightweight yet sturdy in the hand. However, the plastic back panel isn't really that good and takes quite an effort to be pried off. The speakers are placed at the back, and audio output turned out to be just average. Micromax Evok has a removable 3000 mAh battery, which lasted us a whole day of moderate use. The phone has dual sim slots (nano and micro), as well as memory card slot that can take up microSD cards of up to 64GB in size. As the Evok is a budget smartphone, it seems that Micromax had to compromise a little with the user interface.

Though nearly stock Android, it comes preloaded with a host of apps. Most of the apps aren't that useful, such as Micromax's own games which are available only as 3-day trials. The OS also integrates Micromax's 'Around' service, which curates location based information such as nearby hotels, restaurants and more. 'Around' works a lot like Google Now.
Performance and camera
Micromax Evok comes with a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front-facing shooter, which are quite impressive for the price. The camera app comes with numerous settings, in-built filters and shooting modes that let you click photos as per your preference. The only major drawback with the camera is that it doesn't focus properly when you take pictures after zooming in.
In terms of performance, the phone worked just fine with a few glitches here and there. Multitasking is definitely not the Evok's area of expertise, so if you're juggling between video streaming, internet browsing or gaming, it might freeze for a second or two. The phone comes with a regular USB Type-C charger and earphones. Surprisingly, the earphones sounded pretty good during our time with them. Connectivity options include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS. Call quality was good overall as well, even in areas with low signal reception.
