NEW DELHI: Few days ago, John McAfee, the founder of the security software company McAfee Inc., revealed his plans of making the most hack-proof smartphone ever. Speaking to Newsweek website, McAfee said that the device would be the "world's first truly private smartphone."
Likely to be dubbed 'John McAfee Privacy Phone,' the handset is said to launch later this year by MGT, a cybersecurity company headed by McAfee himself.
Talking about the upcoming smartphone, McAfee said that, "Enormous investment in hardware costs have gone into this. The smartphone contains a bank of switches on the back cover that allow the user to physically disconnect the battery, antennas (for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and geolocation), camera and microphone."
He further added that the smartphone won't connect to a Stingray or any other IMSI catcher device. It would also include a web search anonymizer. The company will be detailing the full specifications of the 'John McAfee Privacy Phone' a week before its official launch.
However, McAfee's privacy phone is not intended for general users. The company says that the device is aimed at enterprise users and could cost $1,000.
Recently, he tweeted that the device's hardware will play a vital role in security. McAfee also tweeted an image of himself holding a prototype of the Privacy Phone, along with the text, "Hardware has everything to do with security. Software has everything to do with insecurity".
The website mentions that the handset's 'Version 1' includes switches to physically disconnect it with the battery, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, geolocation, camera, microphone and other features. The smartphone is developed in the US, designed in Denmark and assembled in Europe.
Apple and Google both implement OS-level privacy measures to encrypt user data. We are yet to see what security features John McAfee's Privacy Phone will bring.
